Managing Technological Change 3
Today
Today, we wake up and a microchip automatically turns on our coffee machine. We rush out of the house and a sensor regulated by the cars computer detects the temperature and adjust the fuel settings for a quick start. We proceed down the road and cameras attached to a command central monitor us. Finally, we arrive at work where our computers confront us. Hopefully, they are ready to go even if we are not.
Technological change is now just a common part of everyday life. How do we deal with it? Of course, there is range of human emotion and response to that question (Marchewka, 2006). The pendulum swings from those who want nothing to do with it to those that embrace every new gadget and want more. To some an iPod is just noise in their ear while for others it is their world to the exclusion of others.
This paper will start by addressing our sociological transition in our technological environment. From there we see how the technical community handles changes in the IT environment. Next, this document considers the propriety of the change. Lastly, we will ponder the direction of these technological changes.
Transition
How do we fit into this technological world? In a modern society, we are in it whether we embrace it or not. Often we do not even have the option of accepting or rejecting the change. A change in our governments policies or a companys business can force it on us if we must deal with them. Furthermore, a change for business or our government requires technological development because these organizations are dependent on them for their operations. Their new policies dictate change from the inside even if we on the outside do not accept the change. Big brother can conspire against us to make us pay whereas those internal to a company can conspire against a new system and reject it (Marchewka, 2006).
